Alarm Over Roe Deer Fawn Deaths in Bavaria

A report published in Germany attributes roe deer fawn mortality of up to 30% in certain parts of Bavaria to drought and heat, but public evidence establishing the figure’s scope, methodology and causes is still lacking.

The German publication JAGER Magazin has raised the alarm over high mortality among roe deer fawns in some parts of Bavaria. The publication attributes to the Bayerischer Jagdverband, the organisation representing Bavarian hunters, an estimate that losses of up to 30% have resulted from persistent drought and high temperatures.

For now, the percentage should be treated as a claim by an interested party. No original publication from the Bayerischer Jagdverband or confirmation from environmental or veterinary authorities has been found detailing the regions studied, the number of animals observed, the period analysed or the specific causes of death. The figure therefore cannot be extrapolated to Bavaria as a whole.

What has been established is that the region experienced adverse weather conditions during 2026. In July, the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry described a period of severe spring drought followed by a heatwave. It also warned of significant differences between regions and soil types. That statement confirms the context of heat and water shortages, but does not in itself establish extraordinary mortality among roe deer fawns.

A plausible link, but not proven in this case

Scientific literature suggests that low rainfall could plausibly affect recruitment in the European roe deer, Capreolus capreolus. A study of 130 radio-tagged fawns monitored over seven seasons in a sub-Mediterranean population found a positive relationship between spring rainfall and survival. Other long-term monitoring studies indicate that fawns depend on the food resources available during their first spring and summer.

However, plausibility does not amount to proven causation. Attributing the Bavarian losses to drought would require distinguishing them from other causes of mortality, such as predation, disease, accidents or agricultural operations. It would also be necessary to clarify whether the reported 30% is based on carcasses found, tagged animals, observations of females accompanied by fawns or comparisons between population counts. Each method measures different phenomena and has its own biases.

What should be measured before management is adjusted

Useful monitoring for wildlife managers would require each area to be clearly defined, a timeframe to be set and the results to be compared with previous seasons. Radio telemetry, monitoring of females and fawns, systematic recording of finds and post-mortem examinations would help distinguish a genuine fall in survival from reduced detectability. The Bavarian forestry administration has already used telemetry and microhabitat analysis in research involving roe deer fawns and the risks they face during mowing.

On the ground, the warning supports closer coordination between hunters, farmers and technical specialists, but it does not yet justify a single approach across Bavaria. The priority is to identify where the losses are concentrated and what is causing them. In fields due to be mown, the Bayerischer Jagdverband itself regards thermal imaging drones as an effective tool for locating fawns before machinery enters; this measure reduces a known risk, although it cannot on its own quantify or remedy the possible effects of drought.
