The bear attack that has become the most viral one caught on video

Two small children, his wife, his pets… No one was safe in their own home because the female bear had decided to settle in his back yard with her three cubs. His apple trees, protected by metal fences, seemed to be the animals’ target.

So, when Lawrence Michalchuk returned from a trip and his in-laws told him that neither shouting nor other loud noises had worked, he decided to pick up his shotgun and go outside to drive from his property the great threat that had taken over the area outside his house.

He approached shouting, dressed in high-visibility clothing and firing a shot into the air alongside his dog, but far from achieving his aim, the female bear charged at him with all her fury. Although he backed away as fast as he could, the bear was almost on top of him, forcing him to shoot at one of her hind legs. The impact knocked the predator down, giving him precious time to escape and get inside the house before she resumed her charge.

The footage was recorded by his wife from inside the home. When he managed to get inside, she repeatedly asked him whether he was all right and where the bear was. Despite having hunted since he was a child, Michalchuk did not answer. Terror gripped his throat and he was breathing with great difficulty.

Shortly afterward, after sharing the shocking footage, he began to receive attacks over what had happened, in response to which he stated in an interview with CBC that he had never intended to kill the female bear, but had to shoot to save his life, and that the female, wounded in her left hind leg, eventually left the property and took her cubs with her.
