A wild boar invites itself to a sardine barbecue on St John’s Night

In the parish of Vilachá, as in many other parts of the country, St John’s Night is marked on the festival calendar for celebrating gatherings and traditions that are deeply rooted in popular culture. In Galicia, fire, embers and sardines become the protagonists of the night of the summer solstice. But in this Ourense enclave, another protagonist joined the celebration.

One of the many wild boars that roam the urban area let itself be guided by its sense of smell and came so close to the sardines and the rest of the food they were preparing that it achieved its aim and left the neighbourhood party with a full stomach.

This is how the author of the video that immortalised the animal’s shamelessness told it: “Yesterday, the residents of Vilachá, in Boborás, were celebrating their St John’s when they received a most unexpected visit… It appeared there without warning and without being invited, but as hospitality is paramount in Boborás, there was no problem: it was also looked after. And, apparently, it made short work of the sardines it was able to eat and that they let it have. One of those unusual scenes that can only be experienced here, which I saw with my own eyes and which now has to be told.”
