Wild Boar Sow Leads Her Piglets Across a Pedestrian Crossing

A large female wild boar has been filmed leading her piglets across a road by using a pedestrian crossing, in one of those urban wildlife scenes that is striking because of how ordinary it appears.

The sow seems to know exactly where she needs to cross. With her young following close behind, she moves over the marked crossing and leads the group from one side of the street to the other.

The video shows the typical behaviour of a protective female wild boar, keeping the piglets together while moving through an area shaped by people, traffic and paved streets.

Although the scene may look almost comical, encounters of this kind also underline the growing presence of wild boar in and around urban areas. The species is highly adaptable and often takes advantage of food, shelter and quiet routes on the edge of towns and cities.

For pedestrians and drivers, the safest response is to keep distance, avoid approaching the animals and never try to feed them. A sow with young can react defensively if she feels cornered or threatened.

In this case, however, the wild boar family simply crosses the road and continues on its way, with the young animals following the route set by their mother.
