Where stray cats, rats and other small opportunistic animals once searched for food, wild boar are now increasingly taking their place. Across parts of Europe, animals that once stayed in woodland and farmland have become accustomed to entering urban areas in search of easy meals.
A rubbish container left open and overflowing with bags is an irresistible attraction for a large sounder of wild boar, made up of several adult females and many young piglets. The biggest sows climb onto the containers and try to reach the waste inside.
Once these animals become attached to a reliable food source, there is little that can be done to simply “convince” them to return to the fields and forests they should never have left. Easy food allows them to breed more successfully, multiplying the problem within just a few years.
That concern has led town councils and local administrations in Spain and other European countries to launch measures aimed at reversing the trend.

Anti-tip bins and reinforced lids
The most widespread response is the installation of containers specifically designed to resist wild boar. These systems usually combine physical barriers, better waste management and, where necessary, population control.
The aim is to reduce access to easy food, because household rubbish is one of the main factors encouraging wild boar to become habituated to populated areas.
- Heavier lids or mechanical closing systems.
- Pedals that require a certain amount of force to open the container.
- Latches that stop the lid from being lifted from the outside.
- Programmed night-time locking systems.
In municipalities in Catalonia, the Basque Country, Navarre and Galicia, where conflicts with wild boar are frequent, several models of “anti-boar” containers have been tested with generally positive results.
Fenced areas for rubbish containers
In the most problematic areas, local authorities are also building enclosed waste points using simple perimeter fencing made of metal or wood, masonry walls and pedestrian access gates.
This solution is common in residential developments close to forested areas, especially in Catalonia, where urban wild boar have become a recurring problem.

European cities facing the same challenge
In Barcelona, the presence of wild boar coming from the Collserola Natural Park has led to reinforced containers, public information campaigns and capture programmes targeting animals already habituated to the urban environment.
Genoa, in Italy, is one of Europe’s best-known examples of urban wild boar. The city has used fencing, special containers and population control to reduce incursions into residential neighbourhoods.
In Berlin, authorities combine waste management with monitoring and population-control programmes, especially in outer districts close to woodland.
No single measure solves the problem
Experience across Europe suggests that no single measure is enough. The best results come from combining several actions at once.
- Containers that animals cannot access.
- Rapid removal of organic waste.
- Effective bans on feeding wild animals.
- Population control when densities become excessive.
Studies carried out in European cities agree that when wild boar stop finding food in rubbish containers, their visits decline noticeably within a few months. Food availability remains the main factor explaining why they enter urban environments in the first place.
