The British debate over the release of pheasants for small-game shooting has gained a new scientific reference point. On 15 May 2026, Natural England, the public body that advises the UK Government on nature, published Do farm-reared and released pheasants and red-legged partridges affect ground invertebrate communities?, a selective evidence review focused on the possible effects of farm-reared pheasants and red-legged partridges on ground invertebrates.
The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, which authored the review, gave its own reading of the report on 15 June: there is no evidence that pheasant releases are causing a significant, broad-scale reduction in insects across the British countryside. The review itself, however, is more nuanced. It says impacts can occur where birds are concentrated at high densities, especially around release pens, feeding areas and woodland edges.
The key issue is density and management
Natural England’s summary notes that releasing pheasants, Phasianus colchicus, and red-legged partridges, Alectoris rufa, is widespread across the UK lowlands, but that their ecological effects on soil and ground-dwelling invertebrates remain only partly understood. The review gives particular attention to two doctoral theses that had not previously been widely published and had undergone limited peer review, alongside other studies on diet and invertebrate communities.
According to the official summary, existing research suggests that high densities of young pheasants inside woodland release pens can reduce some larger invertebrate groups, particularly carabid beetles. The likely mechanisms include direct predation, trampling, soil disturbance and nutrient enrichment. Away from these concentration points, the pattern appears different: effects decline quickly with distance and as birds disperse.
The GWCT highlights that one of the studies reviewed sampled almost 40,000 invertebrates, representing 308 species, across six large protected grassland areas designated as SSSIs, or Sites of Special Scientific Interest in the British system. In those areas, where pheasants were present at average densities of between 5 and 20 birds per hectare in autumn and winter and around one bird per hectare or fewer in spring and summer, researchers did not detect a measurable reduction in invertebrate abundance, richness or diversity.
A technical question in a highly political debate
The importance of the review goes beyond entomology. In the United Kingdom, the annual release of pheasants and red-legged partridges for shooting is one of the most contested practices in game management, drawing scrutiny from conservation groups, rural organisations, shoot managers, scientists and regulators.
The dispute is not limited to insects. It also covers protected habitats, disease risks, local pressure on vegetation, effects on predators, supplementary feeding, hedgerow and woodland management, field margins and the economic role of driven shoots in rural areas.
For that reason, the review moves the discussion away from a broad accusation — that pheasants are “wiping out insects” — and towards a more measurable question: under what conditions, at what densities, in which habitats and how far from release points can negative effects occur? The provisional answer is that the risk is concentrated where the birds are concentrated, not necessarily across the whole managed landscape.
Natural England’s own report page also acknowledges knowledge gaps. These include the need to better understand how specialist invertebrates respond and to define more precisely the spatial reach of pressures linked to gamebird releases. That caution matters because part of the reviewed material comes from doctoral theses with limited wider scientific circulation, even though the report carries the institutional weight of having been commissioned by Natural England.
Best practice versus broad restrictions
The practical conclusion put forward by the GWCT is that management should focus on preventing excessive concentrations of birds in sensitive sites. That means limiting densities in release pens, placing feeders correctly, encouraging birds to disperse and applying good-practice guidance in woodland and high-nature-value areas.
For the organisation, where that management is properly followed, negative effects on invertebrates are likely to be small and localised. It also argues that habitats associated with game management — hedgerows, margins, game crops, rides, clearings and structured woodland edges — can benefit insects and other wildlife.
A critical reading is still necessary. Previous reports from conservation organisations such as the RSPB have warned that releasing large numbers of non-native farm-reared birds can have a range of ecological impacts, and that uncertainty remains over effects at broader scales. The new review does not close that debate, but it does provide a more precise basis for separating demonstrable local impacts from general claims about insect decline.
In the British context, where licensing decisions in protected areas and regulatory pressure on small-game shooting remain sensitive, the report may become an important reference for shoot managers, public authorities and critics of the current model. Its value will depend on whether it is read in full, tested against independent science and translated into verifiable measures on the ground.
